E embora nunca possamos estar juntos, jamais estaremos separados!

English Version:

And although we cannot be together, we will never, ever be apart.

With this ends Linda Hamilton’s narration in the opening credits to “Beauty and the Beast”, a tv series from the 80´s.
.
The story has been around since in 1831 Victor Hugo wrote The Hunchback of Notre Dame” and in 1910 Gaston LerouxThe Phantom of the Opera”. Deform man meets woman and they create a special bound. But is deformation makes him live outside society. He is Vincent, she´s Catherine.

If showed today, the series would not run for long. Actually, it never did. It lasted only three seasons, from 1987 to 1990. Even from a distance I recall the main flaw was to follow a formula to the extreme. Vincent was always helping Catherine from dangerous bandits. But in 1998, when it was showed in Portugal, it didn’t make much difference. It was a success. From the point that started: with the melody of the overture.

Catherine’s character get murdered in the beginning of the third season. From here on, the plot stays focus on fights, violence and death. The show isn’t renew.

Actor Rol Pearlman won the golden globe for best tv series acting in the year of 1989. The show also won a two well deserved emmys for it’s musical contribution.
